Meet Carole, the Artist behind The Blue Herbarium
Hi, I’m Carole, a cyanotype artist living on the west coast of Scotland. With a background in Biology and Education and a lifelong love of photography, my interests led me to discover the 19th century camera-less photographic technique of Cyanotype. This is the medium I focus my work on today. My work is deeply inspired by the delicate interplay of nature and light. I find endless beauty in the botanical forms I capture, preserving their essence through the ethereal blue hues of cyanotype.
The Process
The cyanotype process is also known as Sunprinting.
Two iron based salts are mixed together in equal amounts, making a light sensitive solution which can be applied to a surface. Once dry and exposed to sunlight, a chemical reaction takes place, causing the coated surface to turn deep blue, while any areas covered by objects, such as leaves or feathers, remain white, resulting in a Photogram. The exposed print is then developed under running water, fixing the image. For more information on the cyanotype process ‘click here’
